Chapter One
Vladimir Trance was tired of being alone. He’d spent the last three hundred years without a mate by his side. Of course he had his friends, Trey and Lucan Drierge and their new mate Angelina Canley, as well as his best friend Dexter Templeton, but he wanted what Trey and Lucan had. He wanted a mate. As much as he was happy for his young friends, he was also jealous, not that he would ever let them know that.
He sat back in the large wingback armchair as his kind began to leave his house. None of them needed to use the front door, for which he was grateful. There was nothing worse than having his neighbors poking around in his business. Although he had a large estate, if they saw all the people who had arrived and then left, he knew they would be curious. Vlad had gone out of his way to make sure his privacy was complete by staying away from human eyes, but every now and again he caught their speculation seeping into his mind as they drove or walked past.
He watched as Lucan and Trey each kissed the back of Angelina’s hands and even he—a jaded, three-hundred-year-old vampire—could see how much in love they were by that simple action and from the emotion in all of their eyes.
Vlad sighed with a bone-deep tiredness, and it wasn’t just because he had shown everyone the new skill of apparition he had learnt from the white witches. He hated the fact that the evil humans killing vampires were in cahoots with the dark warlocks. They had plans to take over the human-ruled world and treat them like slaves and cattle for their own immoral use. What worried him the most right now was that the dark warlock and his cronies were intent on trying to get to one of the vampires’ female mates. According to the deceased, evil human-slaying vampire, Paulo Harold, the dark warlocks were hell-bent on obtaining immortality by taking the blood of any female vampire mate. But what worried him most was the mate didn’t even have to have completed the blood exchange with her mate or mates to achieve that goal. All it took was one blood exchange for the female to pass on the gift of eternal life even if they didn’t know it.
Since the evil factions were working hand in hand to take over the Earth and all humankind, and still hadn’t been stopped from their malevolent plan, Vlad thought it was the worse time for any of them to fin
d a mate. Even as that thought coalesced he looked over to Angelina again. She was a beautiful as well as an amazing woman. She’d almost single-handedly fended off George Pike after only having been turned for less than a month. How she’d learned the skills so quickly needed to preserve her own life was still astounding to him. Vlad had lived for three centuries and was still learning new skills.
Trey, Lucan, and Angelina gave him a wave before letting their human forms break down into tiny particles before streaking out of the house and off into the night. What he wouldn’t give to have a woman at his side to love and hold for the rest of eternity. The yearning to find his mate was such a great craving, but he was glad he hadn’t found her yet. He wanted to be able to bring her into his home without the threat of the dark warlocks or evil vampires coming to try and take her away from him.
Dexter was sitting in the armchair next to him as he, too, soaked up the warmth of the burning logs in the fireplace off to the side of the glowing cavern. His friend looked bored but tired, too. Vlad automatically spoke words of valediction as one after the other of their friends and comrades left his home. Once more, finally alone, he watched Dex’s face change from a bored, stoic expression to one of worried intent.
“Have you been able to pinpoint George Kite or any of his minions yet?”
“No. I’ve tried all his local haunts in the seedy side of downtown Portland, but no one seems to know where he’s hiding. What worries me more is that the evil ones we have been trying to eliminate seem to have also gone underground. It doesn’t look like we are going to be able to do anything until they make another move. We just have to hope and pray that if anyone else among our kind, our friends, find their mate, that they can keep her safe.”
“I’m fucking sick of this shit,” Dex snarled and rubbed a hand over his face. “No matter what age we’re in, there is always some sort of enemy to be defeated. When are we ever going to be able to live in peace, Vlad?”
“I wish I knew the answer to that question, Dex. At least then we would have a goal to work toward. At the moment we are flying blind, and I don’t like that one bit. God knows how many more dark wizards are working with and following Kite.”
“I feel like we will be fighting some foe or enemy for the rest of eternity. There will always be some money or power hungry nemesis wanting the easy way out. Why can’t they just fucking work like everyone else?”
Vlad pushed to his feet with a sigh. “Let’s go and feed. I know you’re as hungry as I am. I can feel your need. We won’t solve any of this tonight, so let’s go and enjoy one of the simple pleasures in life.”
Vlad dematerialized, and less than a heartbeat later Dexter did the same. They went streaming out of the house through a tiny gap in the window and raced through the night. When he was on the edge of Forest Park, he made sure the coast was clear and solidified his body again. Dex was beside him a moment later, and without a word they began walking deeper into the park. The scents of the night were crisp and clean, and as he inhaled the lush aroma of cypress trees and the perfume of flowers, he reached out with his mind searching for prey. It didn’t take him long to lock onto a group of young men talking excitedly as they hurried down the footpath toward the other side of the common. Using his preternatural speed, he was behind the group of six men an instant later.
He was glad there were so many of them since his appetite seemed to be more ferocious than usual. It would take feeding from at least three of them to slake his hunger, and he wondered if that was because of his yearning for a mate after watching the newly mated trio back at his house.
Compelling the men with his mind, they stopped talking and all six men turned toward him and Dex, who was once more at his side. Vlad stepped forward to the first youth, grabbed a hold of his hair, and tilted his head back. He could hear the blood rushing through his veins, and his fangs dropped down from his gums. He swept his tongue over the strong pulse point in the young man’s neck, and then with a groan of ravenous intent he sank his fangs deep. After a few mouthfuls of the precious life-giving fluid, he withdrew his teeth and licked across the puncture wounds he had made, closing and healing the marks at the same time. He moved onto the next male and then the next, and still his hunger wasn’t appeased. With a sigh of frustration, Vlad wiped the men’s memory of him and Dex and then sent them on their way.
“What the hell is happening to us, Vlad? The blood hunger is getting worse as we get older. Feeding from one of them should have been more than enough, yet feeding from all three didn’t seem to make any difference.”
“I don’t know, my friend, but I don’t like it. The older we get the more we need to feed. There used to be a time when I could last all week on the blood of one human and now…” Vlad pushed his fingers through his hair and cursed when he dislodged the queue holding his hair back from his face. With an impatient curse, he used his mind to tie it back into place.
“I’m too restless to go back home. I need to walk,” Dex said before turning on his heels and beginning to do just that.
Vlad caught up with him and then walked silently beside his childhood friend. He kept his mind open and scanned the humans as they walked past. Some of their thoughts amused him and some of the less nice thoughts made his anger rise. They walked across the NW St. John’s Bridge and then continued on until turning left onto N Lombard Street.
Scents of cooking food and brewing coffee assailed his nostrils as he and Dexter came close to John Street Café. He and Dexter were about to cross the road away from the noise, but as he turned to step from the curb, the café door burst open and two women exited, laughing and smiling as they walked.
One was petite and curvy with shoulder-length, wavy, dark-brown hair. He couldn’t see her face but he didn’t need to. He just knew that she would be beautiful. As he watched the sway of her feminine hips, his cock twitched in his pants. She moved with a fluid feminine sexiness that made his hands itch to touch her, to shape the curve of her hips and over the delectable cheeks of her ass.
Her natural perfume hit him and the blood hunger roared to life. All Vlad could smell was honeysuckle and vanilla. Dex reached out and gripped his arm and he, too, inhaled deeply. His friend’s pupils dilated and wiped out the color of his green irises. Vlad wondered if he looked as frightening as Dex did when all the color bled from his eyes, leaving behind black orbs.
“Mate,” Dex yelled into his mind.
“Yes. Mate.” Vlad met Dex’s gaze and then as one they turned to follow the women.
Vlad reached out and brushed against the petite brunette’s mind. Other than the fact that the woman with the red hair was his mate’s friend, she didn’t interest him in the least. He couldn’t get over how small his mate was. She couldn’t be any more than five foot one or two, and even though she was slim and petite, she had curves in all the right places. Her hips were gently rounded and her ass was a tight little peach he would just love to take a bite out of. Vlad delved into the edges of her mind, and what he found sent his senses reeling and his body tightening and heating with lust. She was only twenty-three and had just finished up a college course in art and had not long started working for the Portland Museum. The irony of her workplace nearly made him laugh out loud. He loved that place and spent many an hour admiring the art that was from eras gone by. He often visited the museum, after it was closed of course, and he wondered if he would have picked up her scent when he went there next. He wondered if she would run for the hills screaming with fear, if she knew of his and Dexter’s existence.
He probed into her mind a little further, searching for her name. And then he found it. Her name was Calista Morgan. He’d only gotten a glimpse of her face when she exited the café and wanted her to turn and face him more than his next breath. As if she’d heard him or maybe felt that he and Dex were following her and her friend, she glanced back over her shoulder. Her face was exquisite with small features, a pert little nose, and beautiful green eyes. She frowned when she saw him and Dex but quickly
looked to the front again.
Vlad slowed his pace and Dex did the same. Neither of them wanted to frighten her or cause her any unnecessary stress.
“She is so fucking sexy,” Dex said.
“And how,” Vlad replied.
“How the hell are we going to get to know her?”
“I haven’t worked that out yet.” Vlad sighed. He wanted to rush over to her and sweep her off her feet. His beast was clawing at his guts, urging him to claim her by exchanging blood with her, but he pushed it back down and took a few deep breaths.
He and Dex cloaked their bodies from view when she looked back again. Vlad could see and feel her relief when she didn’t see them following her. They had been walking for about five minutes when the two women stopped outside a small cottage. Her friend gave her a hug and then walked inside. Calista started walking again. She walked to the end of the street and around the corner. He and Dex put on a burst of preternatural speed and caught up to her. He was so glad he did when he spotted three large men walking toward their mate from the opposite direction.
Calista lowered her head and kept walking. She portrayed a calm she was far from feeling. Just as the men were only a few steps away from her, she stepped off the curb as if to cross the street. One of the burly thugs lurched forward and grabbed her arm.
“Let me go,” Calista said quietly, but Vlad could feel her terror.
“What’s a pretty thing like you doing out all alone?”
“None of your business,” she snapped and tried to jerk her arm from his hold. When the other two men moved closer, effectively surrounding her, blocking her in, Vlad saw red. Rage as he’d never known before swept through his body. He pushed into one of the thugs’ minds and saw their nefarious intentions. Using his mind control, he compelled the asshole to release his mate and then to go to the local police station to confess to all the crimes he had committed. The bastard and his friends had already raped several women, and Vlad couldn’t let them do so again. After he released the first man from his mind control, he latched onto the second and gave him the same orders. Dex had already released the man he was controlling with his mind, and when Vlad had finished with the other guy they watched the fuckers walk away until they couldn’t see them anymore.
