  Chapter One

  Calbert Garton couldn’t get the image of that Japanese underworld criminal, Billy Kimura, shooting Yvonne Butters in the head, out of his own. He and his brothers, Fletcher and Lawford, as well as the rest of the team members of the Elite Dragoons, had witnessed a lot of violence and death as they served their country, but to see a woman shot in the head made his gut churn. What made him even angrier was that Yvonne had been sent to infiltrate their ranch and find out where they were hiding. It seemed that when the chips were down and Billy Kimura had been in danger of being caught, he hadn’t had a qualm about sacrificing the so-called love of his life. Obviously the guy had been using Yvonne, and as much as he knew she deserved to be incarcerated for her criminal activities, he wouldn’t have wished her dead. He hated any sort of violence against women, but after finding out what Yvonne had done, he’d wished he could have saved her so she could do her time in jail.

  It had broken Prudence Peter’s heart to learn that her so-called best friend had only befriended her because she had the blonde-haired, blue-eyed characteristics that Yvonne and her cohorts were looking for. Prue, Sara-Jane Cantor, and Nicole Maynard had all been kidnapped by those assholes, and if it hadn’t been for the Elite Dragoons and their empathetic abilities, God knew what would have happened to those three women. The Japanese underworld criminals had been kidnapping the fair-haired women from the streets of America to fulfill orders for their clients, and those three women would have all ended up as sex slaves in another country.

  What filled Cal with fury was the way Prue had suffered and was still suffering. Every now and again, he would see her staring off into space and tears would come into her eyes. She looked so goddamn sad, but she had her fiancés’ to help her through her grief and the emotions plaguing her. She was engaged to Thorpe, Adam, and Huntley Lathan, other members of their team. In fact, all the women they had rescued were now in ménage relationships with his team members.

  Cal and his brothers wanted a relationship like that with a special woman, too, but he couldn’t see that happening anytime soon. It had been nearly three months since the day Yvonne and Billy had tried to kidnap Prue right out from under their noses, and there had been no more alerts or reports to police anywhere in the US of blonde-haired, blue-eyed women being kidnapped or going missing. He had a feeling they hadn’t seen or heard the last from the Japanese underworld criminals, but it looked like they were lying low for now. Or they were planning.

  Billy Kimura had managed to escape that day, and every team member of the Elite Dragoons knew that they were vulnerable. Billy was an alias and none of them knew what the asshole’s real name was, but that fucker knew where their ranch was, and Cal felt like they were sitting ducks. If another woman was reported missing, there was no way in hell the whole team was going to leave the ranch to try and find her. They couldn’t leave any of the women alone because it was just too fucking
dangerous.

  Their CO, Tony Sullivan, had greased the palm of a reporter in Japan with some American greenback and was waiting on some information. Aguri Akashi was digging deep into the Japanese Diet, the government, to find evidence on some corrupt politician or politicians. Cal had a feeling that if Aguri managed to get what they needed, then the Elite Dragoons would bust this sex slave ring wide open. But it was hard sitting on his hands. He and his brothers were used to being in the thick of things, and he was getting restless. Cal wanted to be able to end this shit so he could settle down. He’d been living on pins for the past few months, and only a good battle with those fuckers would settle him down. Once they had brought these assholes down, he and the team could move on with their lives.

  Cal nudged his horse and helped drive the cattle toward the corrals near the barn, glancing over to see his brothers were both shifting restlessly in their saddles, too. He was close to his brothers, and they nearly always knew what the other was thinking. They had lived and fought together and knew each other nearly as well as they knew themselves. He could see that his brothers wanted this sex slave shit to be over, too. Even though they had grown up on a ranch and loved working with the animals and being out on the land in the fresh air, none of them would be able to concentrate properly until their mission was over.

  Fletch moved his horse closer to his, stopping a cow from breaking from the heard, and then stayed closer to his side. He glanced to his left and saw that Law was moving closer, too.

  “Has Whit heard anything from Tony yet?” Fletch asked.

  “No.”

  “Damn it all to fucking hell. I want to end this crap,” Law snapped.

  “We all do, Law. You just have to be patient.”

  “Yeah, like you are?” Law barked out a laugh that held no humor. “You’re more antsy than the both of us put together.”

  “Fuck you,” Cal snarled and flipped his brother off.

  “I just need some action. We’ve been living on adrenaline for the last three months waiting for something to happen. We know it’s coming. I can practically taste the danger in their air,” Fletch said.

  “Yeah.” Cal sighed and was glad when all the cattle went into the corral without baulking and one of the ranch hands closed the gate. He and his brothers would probably have gone a little insane if they didn’t have the ranch work to keep them occupied. There wasn’t really any necessity for him and his brothers to work the animals or the land because they had good, reliable ranch hands, but the work was keeping them sane. The other men had their women to help keep them calm and occupied, as well as their work trying to find the Japanese underworld crims, but Cal and his brothers needed to keep themselves busy more. They didn’t have a woman with a soft touch or the bliss to be found in her sweet body.

  He’d seen how happy and content his teammates were and how much in love they were with their women. Just a touch to the arm seemed to be enough to relieve the stress all the teammates were under. What he wouldn’t give to have a sweet-smelling woman to love and cuddle up to.

  Just as he dismounted his horse, Cal’s cell phone vibrated. He handed the reins of his mount over to the ranch hand then pulled his cell from the clip on his belt and saw that Whit had called a meeting. He glanced at his brothers and saw them both reaching for their cells after they dismounted. None of them spoke as they headed to the main house and the big meeting room.

  The other nine members of the team were already seated around the large conference table and looked up when Cal and his brothers entered. From the serious expression on his team leaders’ faces, something was going down. Cal’s heart started racing, and he took a deep breath and exhaled slowly. He called on his military training and pushed all his emotions down deep, becoming the cold, hard warrior he’d learned to be. He glanced toward his brothers as he sat down and saw that their eyes had turned ice-cold and their expressions stoic and wondered if he looked like they did. He gave a mental shrug. It didn’t matter what he looked like. The only thing that mattered was getting the job done. Whatever that may be.

  “You’ve heard from Tony?” Cal asked.

  “Yes, but not about what we were hoping for,” Dalton replied and then looked to Whit.

  “There’s a situation in Africa. Algeria, Frenda to be exact,” Whit said.

  “So this has nothing to do with the sex slave ring?” Law asked and relaxed back into his seat.

  “No,” Hayward replied.

  “What’s up?” Fletch asked.

  “Three US aid workers have been kidnapped and are being held for ransom in Frenda by some rebels. Tony wants us to go in and get them out, but he’s asked that only one team unit do so. He knows that we’re vulnerable until we’ve taken out the Japanese underworld assholes.”

  “We’ll do it,” Cal said without looking at his brothers. This was just what they needed, to get in amongst the action for a bit. Sitting around doing nothing for another couple of weeks may just send him over the edge. He gave a mental snort. He was too damn much of a control freak for anything like that to happen, and his brothers were just as bad.

  “Are you sure?” Dalton looked from Cal to Law and Fletch then back to him again.

  “We’re sure,” Fletch answered.

  “Okay, thanks, guys.” Whit’s eyes twinkled, and Cal had a feeling that he and the rest of the team knew why they wanted off the ranch for a bit.

  It was too damn fucking hard watching the rest of their teammates interacting with their women, and even though he wanted a woman of his own, he needed a break from watching them. He was jealous, and if he stayed around the men and women, he was going to end up biting someone’s head off.

  “You leave in half an hour. That should give you enough time to shower, change, and pack and load up your weapons. A helicopter will be picking you up from here, and then you’ll be flown in a military-issue stealth bomber to a US aircraft carrier currently situated in the Alboran Sea. Once you’ve rested up, you’ll be choppered into Algeria for a rescue mission. You’ll have a SEAL team at your back, but you three will be in lead. Do you have any questions?”

  “No,” Cal and his brothers answered simultaneously.

  “Okay, get your asses moving. Good luck and stay safe,” Whit said.

  Cal nodded and then hurried from the room with his brothers at his heels. He couldn’t wait to get started.

  Tabitha Carey had never been so scared in her life. She had only been in Frenda, Algeria, for four weeks helping the other aid workers hand out food and water to the less fortunate of the world and loved to be able to make a difference in someone’s life, even if it was only a small difference. It was rewarding to see the smiles she brought to the children’s faces when she provided them with food and helped treat them with immunizations. It was such a crime for anyone in this world to go hungry, and if she had to give her last dollar to make someone else’s life brighter, she would.

  She’d been working with the two doctors, a husband and wife duo, Max and Gloria Parker, and had nearly peed her pants in fright when a group of rebels had come into the clinic with guns pointed at them. She’d been so scared that she’d immediately started shaking. When Max had stepped forward to try and protect her and his wife, he had been hit in the head with the butt of an automatic rifle and knocked unconscious.

  The rebels had tied all three of them up and they had been dragged into a corner of the small clinic and told to stay put.

  That had been over three days ago, and apart from bathroom breaks and having their hands untied so they could eat and drink once a day, the three of them had been trussed up like turkeys for hours on end. They were never given enough water to appease their thirst, only enough so they wouldn’t dehydrate too much and get sick. Tabitha wondered if the rebels’ demands for money were going to be met by the US government and if she and the two doctors would get out of this situation alive. She closed her eyes and leaned her head back against the wall, scrunching her nose when she smelle
d her own sweat. She was nearly willing to kill for a shower, a good meal, and about a gallon of water to drink, but thank God it was almost nighttime and they would have a reprieve as the searing heat diminished.

  Tabitha’s hands were numb and it was painful to move her shoulders. It was hell to have her hands tethered behind her back for hours on end, and it was hard to keep the tears at bay whenever she was released to use the bathroom, but she wasn’t about to give the rebels the satisfaction of seeing her cry over a little discomfort. Although “discomfort” was certainly becoming an understatement.

  There were only five rebels in the clinic with her and the two doctors, but goodness knew how many were outside keeping watch. She and Gloria had been really worried about Max because after being hit on the head he had suffered from a concussion and had been sick to his stomach for a couple of days. He seemed much better, but his color wasn’t good and Tabitha knew if he didn’t get more water he was going to be in real trouble very soon. After not being able to keep anything in his stomach for two days, he was seriously dehydrated. His skin looked gray to her, and she could tell that Gloria was very concerned for her husband.

  Tabitha must have closed her eyes and drifted off because she was startled awake when she heard what sounded like gunfire. Even though there were no lights on in the clinic, her eyesight adjusted to the dark and she could see the silhouettes of their insurgents as they hurried toward the door.

  A rapid staccato of gunfire sounded loud in the quiet hours of the night. She tried to straighten up so she could see more, but Max must have been looking at her. “Get down flat on the floor, Tabby. If any bullets penetrate the building, you don’t want to be a target.”
