  Prologue

  Belinda “Bid” Starling moaned and rolled to her side. Her body felt like it was on fire and she rolled over in her sleep, again. She was aware of the occupants in her room, or was it her mind? It didn’t really matter. What mattered was that they take the ache away.

Apparently six months ago a disturbance had been felt close to the little town he was currently living in. But he had orders to follow, and when he’d been told to move to the small Podunk town, he couldn’t refuse.

  Jerome Major was the eldest hunter alive, as far as he knew, and also the leader of the Midwest. When he gave an order there was no choice but to obey. If he had argued about moving again, he probably wouldn’t still be alive. The hunters had existed since almost the King Arthurian era and it was there job to seek out the dragon shifters and kill them whenever possible.

  Wally, as the stupid humans called him, had been alive for nearly two hundred years and had been trained from practically the day of his birth to search and destroy. But the dragons were cagey bastards and had gone to ground, and from what the older hunters had told the younger ones, they hadn’t seen hide nor hair of those assholes in three hundred years.

  He wasn’t sure that this disturbance was an indication that the dragons were close, but it was his job to find out. If he ignored a directive he would anger the seekers below their leader, and if word got back to Jerome, well he didn’t want to face the elder. He was a cruel bastard. He’d heard stories from some of the other hunters advising him to do as he was told without any contention, otherwise he would be tortured and end up losing his head.

  Wallace loved his job at Rock Springs City Hall even if he didn’t like working with mortals. He and his kind weren’t immortal, but they lived a hell of a lot longer than the average human. That was a plus as far as he was concerned, and the fact that he and his fellow hunters were all what a human woman would call good-looking was also advantageous.

  He’d been attracted to his assistant Belinda from the day she had started at City Hall and had dreamed about having her in his bed, but hadn’t approached her yet. However, he had plans to fuck her until she couldn’t walk and maybe he would keep her for just such a purpose.   He had a job to do. He needed to search out the dragons reported to be felt in this area and eliminate them. Of course he wouldn’t be able to do that on his own, but first he needed to find them. When he did he would call in more hunters and they would take the fuckers down.

  Anger filled him as he thought about those fucking shifters. They thought they were so much better than them, but Wallace knew better. It was their destiny to kill all of them and then they would be the most powerful beings on Earth. They had been taught from the cradle that they were superior and it was their right to rule humans. The beings on this planet were in for a rude awakening when his kind took over governing. They would be bowed down to and amass riches beyond their dreams. The world’s wealth would be at their feet and the humans would have to do as they were told.

  Cattle, all of them would be mindless cattle without any free choice.

  Wallace was looking forward to receiving the accolades from Jerome when he found those dragons and took them out. Maybe his leader would promote him and make him his right-hand man.

  But he would have to try and control his anger, otherwise he might not be able to do his job. Anger was the only emotion a hunter felt, and sometimes it was nearly impossible to control. Only the eldest of them seemed to be able to control their shit, but if he wanted to stand beside Jerome, he was going to have to work harder to keep his angst hidden.

  And then he would have everything. Wealth beyond his dreams, the power to control, and women at his beck and call. Belinda included. Yes, he could just imagine her down on her knees as he fucked her mouth. That was where she, any normal human for that matter, belonged.

  After a quick shower, he dressed in jeans and T-shirt, not bothering with shoes, and made his way out toward the center of the lair. The huge kitchen was the hub of their home, and with so many of his kind living in their hideout, there was always food on the go and someone to talk to.

  Their species had existed since King Arthur and Merlin, and though there were still quite a few of them alive, they had to hide their existence from humans. If word got out, or god forbid one of them was seen, they would be hunted down and wiped out for all time.

  Plus, the hunters were always searching for them. As far back as he could remember, there were always dragon hunters looking for them. Those assholes had one goal in life and that was taking them down.
