  Chapter One

  Kara Benjamin stared about her in wide-eyed wonder and trepidation as she followed the Club of Dominance receptionist, Aurora, through the massive room toward the bar. She was here to meet Emma. With each step she took, her limbs felt heavy with nervousness, yet her whole body was alive with excitement.

  She’d never been to a BDSM club before and she could hardly take in what she was seeing. There was a woman on stage near the dance floor restrained to some weird-looking X-shaped thing while one man hit her with what looked like a small whip and the other man was fucking her pussy with a dildo. Even some of the people on the dance floor were going at it without a care for the other patrons dancing around them. There was no way in hell she would ever let any man beat on her, with or without her permission. But she was glad that the club policy was safe, sane, and consensual. Luckily he’d then turned to Aurora and given her a nod and Aurora had come out from behind the reception desk to lead her to Emma.

  She turned her head back to the direction she was going and was glad she had because Aurora had stopped and she might just have plowed into her and knocked her over.

  “Kara,” Emma squealed and then rushed around Aurora and hugged her. Kara hugged her back and smiled uncertainly at Emma. She and Emma weren’t that close when they had both been working at that insurance company but when Emma had left Kara realized how much she missed her and had gotten in touch with her via e-mail. That was when Emma had invited her to this club so they could catch up.

  “Hi, Emma,” she replied when Emma released her.

  “Hi, yourself. Do you know, I didn’t realize how much I would miss you until we no longer
saw each other anymore?”

  “Yes, that’s how I felt.”

  Emma grabbed her hand and Kara smiled at Aurora as she turned back and started to walk away. “Thank you, Aurora.”

  Aurora waved but hurried across the room without replying.

  “I want you to meet my fiancés.” Emma tugged on her hand and drew her closer to the bar. “This is Gary Wade, Jack Williams, and Anton Taylor but everyone calls him Tank.”

  Kara eyed the three big men and knew right away why Anton’s nickname was Tank. The guy was huge in every way. Gary was a couple of inches shorter than Tank and not as muscular, but he was still damned big, and Jack was shorter and leaner than the others but he wasn’t lacking either. How the hell did Emma manage to end up with three men all to herself?

  Kara nodded and smiled, hoping her shock wasn’t apparent. “Pleased to meet you all.”

  Jack and Tank shook her hands and when she offered her hand to Gary he stared at her for a moment.

  What’s he doing? Is he trying to intimidate me? If he is, it’s working.

  Kara glanced away, drew her hand from his clasp, and turned her gaze to Emma when she started talking, glad for the reprieve from Gary’s intense gaze.

  “Do you want something to drink, Kara?”

  Kara nodded and exhaled slowly. What she thought she should do was turn tail and run, but she also wanted to stay and explore this place. She wanted to see what was going on around her, with a fascinated yet shocked curiosity.

  “What do you want to drink, sub?” Gary asked and for a horrified moment she thought he was talking to her, since he was still watching her intently, but she relaxed a little when Emma answered.

  “And what would you like, Kara?”

  Kara gulped and hoped he hadn’t heard that audible sign of her anxiety but she was pleased when her voice came out sounding normal. “White wine please.”

  When Gary turned his back on her and faced the bar. She drew in a ragged breath and exhaled slowly. She wasn’t attracted to the man, although he and the other two men were good looking, but the aura of confident power emanating from them all made her nervous.

  Tank drew Emma into his embrace and Emma leaned her back against his front and then Jack moved closer to her side and clasped her hand before bringing it to his lips and kissing the back of it.

  “How’s the insurance business?” Emma asked.

  Kara shrugged. She’d been let go as had quite a few other employees because of the economic downturn and she hadn’t been able to find another job. Things were tough right now but at least other people had family they could rely on to help. She had no one.

  “I don’t work there anymore.”

  “Oh? Where are you working now?” Emma asked.

  Kara lowered her eyes and hoped the desperation and sadness weren’t visible when she lifted her head again. “I’m not.”

  Emma reached out with her free hand and squeezed hers. “I’m sorry. If I hear of any jobs going I will contact you.”

  “Thank you.”

  “So what do you think of the club?”

  “Umm…”

  Emma laughed. “It takes a bit of getting used to, doesn’t it?”

  Kara nodded and then thanked Gary when he turned around with their drinks. She took a sip of wine and sighed when the moisture eased her dry throat and mouth. And then the hairs on the back of her neck stood on end and her body tensed. There was someone standing very close behind her and even though she wanted to move aside and turn around, she stayed completely still.

  A shiver wracked the length of her spine and goose bumps rose up over her skin. When she looked up she saw Emma smiling at whoever was behind her. And then a shudder worked its way down her spine, her nipples puckered, and her pussy clenched.

  Emma glanced at her and smiled. Kara shook her head slightly but her friend either didn’t see or just decided to ignore her. “This is my friend Kara Benjamin. She and I used to work at the same insurance company but she’s out of work. Maybe she could help you out?”

  Kara took a step forward and then to the side. When she turned around she found herself facing two men. “Kara, these are Drs. Nathan and Nixon Charleston.”

  She felt as if she was watching from outside her body but her hand raised as first Nathan and then Nixon shook her hand. Tingles of warmth raced up her hand and arm and centered in her chest as they each shook her hands and she said “hi” to them.

  “Kara, it’s nice to meet you.” Nixon moved a little closer to her and even though she wanted to move away, she didn’t want these two men knowing they overwhelmed her. But from the quirk of Nixon’s lips and the gleam in his eyes, he already knew.

  “How long have you been out of work, Kara?” Nathan asked drawing her attention.

  Although she really didn’t want to answer that question, she felt sort of compelled to while she stared into his green gaze, and found herself doing just that. “Four weeks.”

  “Damn, that must be hard. Are you living with your parents?” Nixon asked.

  Kara tensed and felt all the blood leave her face. She didn’t like to think about her biological parents. It was just too painful. She’d never told anyone about how she was conceived and she wouldn’t start now. “No.” She hoped they didn’t hear the hoarseness in her voice or see how tense she’d become, but by the way both men were studying her, she didn’t think they’d missed her reaction.

  Her spine was so straight and the muscles in her back were so tight they were aching and she wondered if she would snap. When she realized her shoulders had scrunched up around her neck she lowered them and then looked down into her wine glass before taking a sip.

  “What did you do at the insurance company?” Nixon asked.

  Kara explained how she signed people up and processed claims.

  “It sounds like you were good at your job. We’d really like to have you working for us, Kara,” Nathan said.

  “I…”

  “We’d give you a trial period of course,” Nixon stated and shrugged his shoulders. “How about you give us three months and if you don’t like the job or something better comes along, then we’ll let you go?”

  Kara felt trepidatious about working for the Charleston brothers, but if she didn’t want to be out on the street by the end of the week, she didn’t have any other options.

  “Okay,” she replied uncertainly. She wondered if these two men were Doms, too. If so she could be setting herself up for a world of trouble. Would they order her around and nitpick on every little thing she did? She’d been alone for her whole life and didn’t want to have someone taking over her life now. There was no way she would let anyone rule her. Not in this lifetime.

  She wondered why the hell Emma would let her three men order her about and looked over to see that the four of them were in a deep conve
rsation. Kara couldn’t hear what they were saying since they were all standing so close to each other and keeping their voices low but the men seemed to hang on every word Emma said, and they touched her constantly. What would it be like to have more than one man catering to your needs? When she realized where her thoughts were taking her she pushed them aside. But from what she could see, Gary, Jack, and Tank loved Emma very much and she loved them right back. She’d never seen her friend look so happy, content, and in love. Emma was virtually glowing under their attention.

  Kara flinched when a large, warm hand landed on her shoulder and she drew in a ragged breath. She glanced to the side and met Nathan’s eyes for a moment and then looked down to the floor.

  “Have you ever been in a BDSM club before, Kara?”

  “No.”

  “Have you ever read anything about the lifestyle?” Nixon asked as he came to stand close to her other side.

  “I’ve read a couple of romance novels that had BDSM elements in it.”

  “What did you think?”

  Nathan had been drawn to Kara Benjamin the moment he’d seen her across the room and he hadn’t even been able to see her face. She was only an inch or so taller than Emma’s diminutive height and she had on high heels.
