  As she cooked she thought about Wilder, Cree, and Nash. The last four days had been the best of Violet’s life. She spent all of her free time with her men.

  They’d started working as deputies, and while she worried about some of the hazards they were certain to face, she would never ask them to do something else. The more time she spent with them, the more she got to know them. They fit into Slick Rock like peas in a pod, because most of the men living in this town were very protective, so it wasn’t a surprise that Wilder, Cree, and Nash wanted to move here or join law enforcement.   “Do you all usually work together?” Vi asked as she gazed at Wilder. Although he’d glanced at her in the rearview mirror a few times, he hadn’t spoken a word. From the way his jaw was clenched tight, something was bothering him.

  “Luke was talking about pairing us up,” Cree said. “This town is growing so fast and there’s more crime than there used to be. He and Damon want us all to work in twos from next week on.”

  “That makes sense. At least y’all will have backup on hand all the time, rather than having to wait for it in a dangerous situation.”

  Nash nodded. “We think so, too, baby. I can tell you’re exhausted. Why don’t you close your eyes?”

  Violet met Wilder’s gaze in the mirror again and frowned when he quickly glanced away. Maybe when they got home in a few minutes, he’d tell them all what was wrong. She leaned her head against the back of the seat and yawned.

  Although she hadn’t been dozing while Wilder drove, Vi hadn’t been able to keep her heavy eyelids open either. With a tired sigh, she opened her eyes and reached for the door handle.

  “Stay where you are, honey,” Cree said. “I’ll come around and help you out.”

  “Okay,” Vi replied, too tired to move just yet.

  Cree opened the door and scooped her up into his arms. Violet glanced over at her cottage, thinking about the laundry and cleaning she needed to do, but she didn’t protest as Cree carried her into their house.

  “Why don’t I just take you straight to bed, honey? You can barely keep your eyes open.”

  While she was aware of Nash and Wilder coming inside and closing the door, she kept her gaze on Cree’s as she tried to decide what to do. As much as she wanted to sleep between them, she’d been neglecting her own place, and she knew if she stayed with them she would only end up wanting to make love with them.

  With a resigned sigh, she shook her head and wiggled out of Cree’s arms. He frowned at her as he set her feet on the floor and then dropped his arms to his sides. She flopped onto the sofa, just after Cree sat. Cree draped an arm around her shoulders and pulled her against his side. “I don’t think that’s a good idea.” Violet covered her mouth as she yawned.

  “Why the hell not?” Wilder snarled his question as he stormed toward her.

  Violet gasped and blinked at him with shock. Wilder hadn’t said a word as he drove them all home and now he was snarling at her. What the fuck?

  She crossed her arms beneath her breasts and glared at him before glancing toward Cree and Nash. They were both frowning at Wilder, too.

  Cree had no idea what had ticked Wilder off, but he had a feeling it had something to do with the phone call he had received from Luke as they’d waited for Violet. He hadn’t even said hi to their woman when she’d gotten into the car, and from the way he’d been grinding his teeth and gripping the steering wheel until his knuckles had turned white, Wilder was pissed.

  He scowled at his brother when Violet tensed and crossed her arms over her chest, but Wilder had his gaze locked with their woman’s and wasn’t taking any notice of him. However, he didn’t think that there was any way Wilder could miss Cree’s glare when he was sitting right next to Violet.

  “You all have work tomorrow just as I do. I need to get up early to go shopping for the diner, and then I have to work through lunch and dinner. I haven’t spent a single night in my own house and have chores that need doing as well.”

  “What’s that got to do with anything?” Wilder snapped.

  Cree couldn’t let Wilder continue talking to Violet that way. He lifted his arm from around her shoulder and shoved to his feet, before walking closer to his brother. “What the fuck crawled up your ass?”

  Nash must have been of the same mind because he stood, too. “What the fuck is your problem?”

  “I can’t deal with this shit,” Wilder shouted just before he turned away and walked toward his bedroom, slamming the door behind him.

  Cree scrubbed a hand over his face and turned toward Violet. His heart flipped in his chest when he saw pain and tears in her eyes. She had her purse over her arm and was racing toward the front door.

  “Violet, wait. Please don’t leave, honey.”

  She swallowed audibly and shook her head. She gazed down the hallway before looking at Nash and then him, again. She opened her mouth as if she was about to say something and then shook her head again before she raced out the front door.

  Cree followed her out and stood on the porch as she hurried toward her own house. He wanted to go after her and calm her down, but he had no idea what to say. He didn’t know what Wilder’s problem was, but he was sure as fuck about to find out.

  Cree hoped that Wilder hadn’t just ruined their chances of a relationship with Violet. If his brother had screwed things up for all of them, he wasn’t sure he’d ever be able to forgive him.

  Wilder was so out of control he wanted to punch something. He also felt guilty as hell for reacting that way in front of Violet. He’d seen the hurt in her eyes just before he’d turned away, but his gut was in knots and he didn’t know what to do.

  Normally he was the calmest out of his brothers, but after what Luke had told him over the phone, he was so full of rage he hadn’t been able to contain it. He hadn’t had the chance to explain to his brothers what was going on because he’d only just ended the call with Luke when Vi had exited the diner.

  His bedroom door burst open so hard the door handle crashed into the wall behind it, denting the plaster. Cree and Nash stormed into the room and glared at him.

  “What the fuck, Wilder?” Nash shouted.

  “Do you have any idea what you’ve just done,” Cree roared. “Violet left in tears, and from the way she was hurting I don’t think she’ll ever want to come back.”

  “I wouldn’t blame her if she didn’t,” Nash snarled. “If you fucked everything up for us with her, I’ll never fucking forgive you.”

  Wilder sank down and sat on the edge of his bed. He scrubbed a hand over his face and sighed. His heart was hurting so much he ended up rubbing his chest. “I’m sorry.”

  “You should be fucking sorry,” Cree yelled. “But you should be apologizing to Violet, not us.”

  “I know.” Wilder nodded.

  “Care to explain what that was all about?” Nash asked in a calmer voice.

  “IA sent their report to Luke.”

  “And?” Cree asked.

  “The sheriff of Bemidji and his deputy were actually living at the cult.”

  “What?” Nash’s voice was hoarse with shock. “Are you fucking kidding me?”

  Wilder shook his head. “I wish I was.”

  “How did they get caught?” Cree walked over and sat on the bed.

  “IA had an undercover detective trailing the assholes.”

  “Fuck!”

  “Yeah.” Wilder rubbed the back of his neck. “Those fuckers were claiming welfare using the names of deceased people, and they were working as lawmen. I’m sure we don’t know the half of it, but there were six women being held against their will. They were being raped nearly every day. They’ve been held hostage for fifteen to twenty years.”

  “Geezus.”

  “What about the girls Violet grew up with? Were they there?”

  Wilder nodded. “Once the detective had enough to raid the place and arrest everyone, the house and land was searched thoroughly. They brought in sniffer dogs, too. They found a woman’s bones buried near the border of the land.”

  “Fuck.” Cree shook his head.

  Wilder shoved to his feet and began to pace. “Those motherfuckers were supposed to serve and protect. They ignored a young girl’s call for help because they were in it up to their necks. How the fuck are we going to tell Violet?”

  “We can’t keep this from her, Wilder,” Nash said. “She’ll probably have to give evidence when those bastards are brought to trial.”

  “I know,” Wilder replied loudly before taking a deep breath as he tried to calm down. “This is going to kill her.”

  “It’ll be hard, bu
t we’ll be by her side. We have to tell her before she sees it on the news,” Cree explained.

  “Shit. I didn’t even think of the media.” Wilder hurried toward the door.

  “Stop.” Nash surged to his feet and moved to block his brother. “You need to give her time to calm down. Tomorrow will be soon enough for you to apologize. Hopefully, when she accepts your apology, we can explain what’s going on.”

  Wilder nodded even though he didn’t want to put off his apology to Violet. But she’d been exhausted, so he gave in and agreed with his brother.

  Cree and Nash told him good night and headed toward their own rooms.

  Wilder got ready for bed but had a feeling he wouldn’t be getting much sleep. His mind was racing in circles, and he was used to cuddling up with Violet. Because he’d let his anger rule his emotions, he was going to spend a long lonely night on his own.

  Hopefully, when he apologized tomorrow night after explaining his outburst, she would have it in her heart to forgive him.

  Wilder rubbed at the knot of anxiety tightening his chest. The hair on his nape had been itching since Luke’s call. Even though he knew why he was feeling antsy, he just couldn’t seem to settle down.

  He tried pushing his internal alarm aside so he could sleep, and first thing tomorrow he would go and see Violet.

  He just hoped that she didn’t slam her door in his face like he deserved.

  Chapter Fifteen

  “Damn it,” Violet sobbed as she stared at herself in the mirror.

  She hadn’t slept a wink last night. Her heart felt as if it had been ripped out her chest only to leave a gaping hole behind. She was hurting and she’d cried so much she’d ended up vomiting.

  She’d just taken a shower, brushed her hair and teeth, and even though she’d applied a light amount of makeup to her face, it couldn’t hide her bloodshot eyes or how swollen they were. The only consolation was that she’d got all her chores done while blubbering her eyes out.
