  “Get in,” John ordered in a harsh voice after rolling the front passenger window down.

  “What the fuck are you doing here?” Danny asked as he opened the door and got into the car.

  “I followed your ass. Don’t you realize I’m trying to help you?” John lied. “If the cops catch up with you, you’ll spend the rest of your life behind bars. Why are you here?”

  “I’m looking for my sister.”

  “You worried about her?” John stared into Danny’s cold, lifeless eyes.

  Danny nodded, but John knew he was lying. “I haven’t seen her since our parents died,” Danny said.

  He was out to kill his stepsister just as he’d killed his father and stepmother. The fucker must have thought John was a total idiot. “Do you have her cell phone number?” John asked, hoping he’d managed to buy another phone and had memorized the sister’s number. If not, he had it, but he wasn’t about to reveal his hand so soon.

  “Yes.”

  “I’ll help you anyway I can,” John said sincerely. If Danny could get the sister to meet up with him away from town, he’d be able to have his cake and eat it, too.   He was going to be living on Easy Street. John chuckled mentally at his own joke. The Bradley house was on Easy Street in Athens, Ohio, one of the elite areas of the town.

  He mentally rubbed his hands together as he glanced at Danny from the corner of his eye. The crazy fucker’s lips were moving as if he was talking to himself. John didn’t care how insane the asshole was. All that mattered was that his plans worked out, and he was going to make damn sure they did. He was going to be living in the lap of luxury.

  Danny stared out the windscreen as his dealer drove the car. He’d been shocked when John had pulled over at the curb and called out to him. He hadn’t had a hit in a couple of days and was starting to withdraw. He was sweating, shaking, and feeling sick to his stomach, but he wasn’t about to beg. He’d already done that before and look where it had gotten him. Deeper and deeper in debt.

  Danny estimated that he owed John about ten large ones, but since he didn’t have a job and had killed his father and stepmother, he couldn’t go and ask them for it. He’d snuck into the house before leaving Athens on the bus, rifling through drawers, cupboards, and closets searching for money, but he hadn’t found any. He’d even tried to open the safe in his dad’s home office, but the combination had been changed. He’d wanted to scream with fury but had managed to suppress the urge at the last minute. If he’d shouted, one of the nosy neighbors was sure to have called the cops.

  You’re running out of time. If you don’t get that money, your sister will get it all. She’s always been given everything she’s wanted. Did your father love her more than you? She isn’t even of his blood. How could your father do that to his own son?

  “Shut up!” Danny shouted as he clutched his aching head. “Just shut the fuck up.” He turned to see John watching him warily, but he wasn’t about to explain his outburst. “What are you really doing here?”

  “I thought I’d help you get your just desserts,” John answered.

  “What the fuck does that mean?” Danny yelled. “How do you know about the fucking money?”

  “You told me.” John slowed the car before pulling into the parking lot of the motel.

  “I did not.”

  “Actually, you did.” John turned the ignition off, turning toward him. “You told me everything the last time you were at my place after I gave you a hit.”

  Danny sank back into his seat. He didn’t remember telling his dealer at all, but anything was possible when he was high. Had he told him about killing his father and stepmom? Or that he was hell-bent on killing his perfect bitch of a stepsister?

  “Tell me what I told you.”

  He listened with half an ear. The voices in his head were going crazy, insisting that John was out to get him and take his money.

  Danny wondered why John hadn’t already handed him in to the cops. From what John had said, he did indeed know everything he’d done. Maybe it was a blessing. Maybe he could use the bastard to drive him around so he could find the cunt.

  Danny clutched his head when the voice grew louder, more insistent.

  “So, who’s coming to work with me today?” Shyann asked as she entered the kitchen. She’d decided to dress for confidence this morning. She smoothed down the blue skirt to the suit she was wearing.   “I am,” Raiden said in a raspy voice as he walked toward her. “You look gorgeous, baby.”

  “Good enough to eat,” Brigg said as he eyed her body over.

  “If we had time, I’d strip you out of that sexy outfit and fuck you on the table.” Tane took a step closer.

  Shyann held her hand up to stop Tane from coming any closer. “As much as I want to make love with you all, I don’t have the time.”

  “You’ll make time for some breakfast, baby,” Raiden stated firmly as he took her suit jacket from her hand before guiding her to the table. He draped her jacket over the back of one of the spare chairs and grabbed her purse, setting it on a stool before seating her.

  “What do you feel like eating, darlin’?” Brigg asked. “I’ve cooked some scrambled eggs and bacon.”

  “Just some toast, please.”

  “You need more than that, sweetness.” Tane frowned down at her as he placed a steaming mug of coffee on the table. “You’ve got a big day ahead.”

  Shyann placed her hand on her nervous stomach as she shook her head. Her insides were roiling, and she didn’t want to exacerbate her unsettled belly by filling it with heavy food.

  “What’s wrong, baby?” Raiden asked as he sat beside her. He lifted her hand from her tummy, laced their fingers together, and kissed the back of it.

  “I’m nervous. I don’t think it would be a good idea to eat too much. I don’t want to have to race away while serving people to toss my cookies.”

  Raiden scooted his seat closer to her without releasing her hand. “You’ve got nothing to be nervous about, Shyann. Didn’t you tell us you used to work
in a library before moving here?”

  She nodded.

  “You set the Slick Rock library up. You know where everything is,” Tane said. “You’ll be fine, sweetness.”

  “Raiden and Tane are right, darlin’. You’re going to knock ’em all dead.” Brigg bent over, kissing her on the cheek as he put some toast in front of her.

  “Thanks. I hope you’re right.”

  The others took their seats, talking as they ate about everyday things. Their light conversation helped settle her nerves somewhat. She only managed to eat one piece of toast with blackberry jelly, but it felt like lead in her stomach, so she pushed the plate away and sipped her coffee. Once she was finished she picked up her dishes, intending to take them into the kitchen to rinse them and put them in the dishwasher.

  Raiden shoved to his feet, taking the plate and mug from her. “Leave them, baby. Tane and Brigg will clean up. Why don’t you go and do what you have to, and then we’ll leave?”

  “Okay.” Shyann hurried toward the bedrooms. She brushed her teeth again, eying herself in the mirror to make sure her hair was in place, drew a deep breath, and walked toward the kitchen again.

  Raiden was waiting in the entrance with her jacket and purse. Brigg and Tane were with him.

  Brigg clasped her hand, tugging her into his arms. He hugged her tightly, caressing a hand up and down her back. “You’re going to have a great day, darlin’. How could you not when you’ll be doing something you love so much?”

  She smiled up at him, the anxiety in her stomach lessening. “You’re right. Thanks.”

  Brigg nodded, leaned down, and kissed her passionately.

  Shyann was breathless when he’d finished. He clasped her shoulders, turning her toward Tane.

  “Brigg and I will see you later, sweetness. We’re going to do the grocery shopping this morning, but later today we’ll call in and sign up for a library card.” Tane pulled her into his arms, grasped her chin, and slanted his mouth over hers.
