  Pen and Paser had been pissed and rightly so, but all had worked out in the end. From what she’d told them Nina had injured the leader of the underworld, Apep, and En hoped that it would take a long, long time
for the snake god to recover, but he wasn’t about to hold his breath.

  What concerned him most was that Apep had figured out a way to create demons using the less impure humans. For thousands of years that asshole and his minions had targeted the pure of heart and mind, and although that was still the case, En was trepidatious over the growing numbers of shadow demons. He just hoped that Apep hadn’t been able to get one of the other gods on his side. If he had, then they could end up in a fight for their lives, and since he and Men, as well as Set and Sab, and Pen and Paser had just found their mates, they would fight until their last breaths.

  Their mates were the light in their long dark lives and he would give his last breath to keep Lavinia safe and so would the other mated sentinels for their mates, as well and Mitry and Weni.

  Lavinia shifted beneath him and he pushed his worrying thoughts aside. He had a mate to love and take care of and he would spend every spare minute he had loving her.

  “I thought the same thing. Why would Ra do something like that?” En asked, not really expecting an answer.

  “I think he was testing her as well as Pen and Paser. She had a few self-confidence issues, but she managed to work through them in time.”

  “Thank the gods for that. I hope he doesn’t do anything like that to Lavinia.”

  “Me too,” Men agreed. “I love her, but having a mate also scares the shit out of me.”

  “Me as well.” En scooted down the bed a little more and reached for the light. He was glad that the others had let them stay home with Lavinia tonight. He hadn’t been looking forward to leaving her in their home while they searched for the demonic. Just the thought of not being close to her tore his heart in two, but he was going to have to get used to leaving her behind until she was adept at fighting. Hopefully she would be safe with Zara and Nina now that they knew how to fight and they also had that light power thing going on.

  Somehow Nina and Zara had tapped into a hidden energy inside of their bodies when they’d been in danger. He had no idea what that powerful energy was but was damn glad they had that ability. Those two women had blown the hoard of demonics into small flecks of ash, saving themselves as well as their mates.

  En wondered if Lavinia would have the same power, but he knew he wouldn’t find out by asking her. Apparently the other women hadn’t known that skill had existed inside their bodies until they were in danger of losing their lives.

  He just hoped that he, Men, and Lavinia didn’t have to find out if she had that skill the hard way. Just thinking about her being so close to the shadow demons sent fear skittering into his heart and blood.

  He took a deep breath and pushed his unsettling thoughts aside. What he needed to do was take one day at a time and make sure that his mate felt loved and happy.

  That was all that mattered in the scheme of things.

  Lavinia’s happiness was paramount.

  Chapter Nine

  Apep grabbed hold of another of his followers and sucked the life out of him. It had been a four weeks since that bitch had hurt him and he still wasn’t fully healed. He had no idea how she hurt him, but he had a feeling Ra had had a hand in that bitch’s ability.

  The demon he had hold of as the last of his soul left its insubstantial body disintegrated into dust. He’d killed nearly five hundred of his followers trying to heal the burns on his body, and although they had diminished and he no longer felt that searing agony deep in his flesh, he still had scars on his body. The only other time he’d felt such pain was when he’d fought Hades. That fucker had covered his entire body with burning sulfur and flames. It had taken him over a century to heal from that encounter, but his pain had been worth it in the end. He’d weakened and incarcerated Hades and now ruled over the underworld. The shadow demons were his to command or kill if he so decided.

  He just wished that he could send them into the heavens to wipe out Ra and Amun, but killing the sun god’s sentinels would be the next best thing. However, every time he sent his demonic followers after those fuckers they failed. His anger was becoming a problem and although he didn’t care about how many of his followers he killed, he was losing control to the point where he felt as if he were going insane.

  He flexed his hands into fists and snarled with rage when the skin on his hands hurt. The burns seemed to have shrunk his flesh and the skin felt so tight it was almost painful. So when another of his demonic got too close to him he grabbed hold of him, opened his mouth, and sank his snake fangs into the shadow’s neck. He shuddered as evil and adrenaline raced through his body and more of the scars faded away. He cursed when the demonic burst into small particles of ash that floated to the floor of the cavern.

  If he kept draining the evil shadows, he would be left with no one to fight for him, so with a sigh of frustration he sank down into his throne. Maybe he should be looking into the power those women had. If he could kidnap another one like the last and he was able to steal her soul he had a feeling he would be more powerful than the sentinels. The thought brought a smile to his face. If after he’d stolen a pure one’s soul and he tapped into that innocent power he might be able to get rid of those bastards in one fell swoop. The thought made him laugh and when he saw the shadow demons cover their ears, fall to the ground, and writhe in pain, he laughed harder.

  He was a cruel bastard and loved to see others suffer, but nothing would give him more satisfaction than watching Ra weep when he killed all of his soldiers.

  Apep rubbed his hands together and began to think of how to get his hands on another of those women.

  Lavinia knew the moment she woke that Men and En were in bed beside her. The heat coming off of their bodies was better than an electric blanket.
